Opinion| The return of Jossey Buthane
Jossey Buthane, a former key member of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and an associate of its leader, Julius Sello Malema, has achieved a significant political victory with the African National Congress (ANC). His efforts have helped the ANC regain control of Ward 10 in the Polokwane Local Municipality, a seat they previously lost to the EFF in 2021.
Buthane’s return to the ANC was highly publicized. It occurred during a regional lecture in Polokwane that honoured Solomon Kalushi Mahlangu. His comeback coincided with multiple resignations from the EFF, hinting at a shift in the political landscape.
The win in Ward 10 was hard-fought. An EFF councillor resigned following legal issues, leading to a by-election. Buthane was instrumental in the ANC’s strategic campaign, dedicating time to connect with the community and win back the seat, partly motivated by his past differences with Malema.
The by-election was a success for the ANC, with Butane playing a central role. His actions have been lauded within his party, establishing him as a significant opponent to the EFF in upcoming elections.
Looking ahead to the national and provincial elections on May 29, 2024, Buthane’s influence and strategies may impact the EFF’s chances. His deep understanding of Limpopo’s political scene is expected to be crucial.
Buthane’s approach, involving intense campaigning and strategic party engagement, marks his political comeback and reinstates him as a key figure in South African politics.
As the elections approach, his recent actions underscore the shifting allegiances and strategies shaping the country’s political environment. Whether this local victory will lead to larger successes for the ANC remains uncertain.
However, Buthane has clearly marked a significant re-entry into the political arena, potentially reshaping the future of both the ANC and EFF in South Africa.
Meanwhile, in response to the unfolding situation in Limpopo, Malema has downplayed the tensions, asserting that no individual can undermine him.
