Outgoing Limpopo premier reflects on his 11-year tenure: “It feels like yesterday …”
OUTGOING Limpopo premier, Chupu Mathabatha, reflected on his 11 years at the helm of a province as he prepares to step down after the 29 May 2024 general elections.
“It feels like yesterday, when I was recalled from my ambassadorial role in Ukraine. I cannot believe it has been 11 years already. Eleven challenging but fulfilling years of my life. I leave this role thrilled that I served my province when it needed me most,” Mathabatha said.
The next step in his political career is likely to be a member of the national assembly by virtue of heading the ANC list of province-to-national, with a tip of a cabinet post should the ANC gain majority rule after the elections.
Addressing the media after chairing his last executive council (EXCO) meeting on Wednesday, Mathabatha said cluster reports highlighting progress made in various sectors were approved, laying a foundation for the next administration.
“However, we recognise that there are outstanding matters, such as issues related to water provision and projects that have stalled for several years,” he said.
He also spoke about achievements attained in the last 30 years in areas such as infrastructure development, economic growth, education, healthcare and social development.
Mathabatha was recalled from Ukraine to take the premiership of the province in 2013 after the collapse of the then administration under the leadership of Cassel Mathale. Five provincial state departments were under national administration.
Mathabatha was mandated to turn the situation around, and the task was not free from pain as there had been several calls for him to step down, with marches to his office even from sections of ANC’s alliance partners.
But he spoke of the need for good governance: “Overall, our tenure has been marked by dedication to improve the lives of the people of Limpopo province through sustainable development, inclusive development and effective governance.
“These achievements serve as a testament to the resilience and determination of the people of the people of Limpopo, and I’m honoured to have been part of this journey. The next administration will in place good work to build on towards the achievement of prosperity.”
