Limpopo ANC councilor sustained multiple gunshot wounds in apparent ambush
ANC councilor in Maruleng local municipality in Limpopo, Tshegofatso Mokgahla, is in hospital after he sustained multiple gunshot wounds in an apparent ambush on Sunday.
The incident happened along the D21 road between Mahlakung Mall and Sekororo Hospital. Mokgahla sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to hospital where he is receiving treatment.
The motive for the shooting is still unknown, and police investigation is underway.
Mayor Tsheko Musolwa has condemned the incident and has urged the community to remain calm. He also called on law enforcement to speedily resolve the matter.
“After such an act of criminality, you got to get somehow a bit of a shiver,” Musolwa said.
DA’s councilor, Portia Moropane, has since condemned the incident: “These kinds of incidents remind us that crime and violence remain one of the burning challenges in our communities as the shooting of councilors is becoming a crisis and a disturbing trend in our municipalities.”
Moropane urged law enforcement agencies to act swiftly to bring perpetrators to justice.
However, she pointed out that the incident should serve as an unfortunate reminder to the mayor and municipal management to intensify local government efforts to strengthen and complement crime prevention strategies.
“Keeping our communities safe is the cornerstone of local development and economic growth,” she said.
