Limpopo police sergeant in alleged killing spree for insurance policies appears in court with daughter, elder sister
FURTHER arrests are imminent in the case of a 43-year old police sergeant Rachel Raesetsa Shokane Kutumela accused of murdering six people for life and funeral insurance policies in Limpopo.
Those to be arrested are suspected of taking part in the killing of the victims who were found dead in various locations since 2019. In one instance, a woman was burned in her shack while a disabled man was discovered drowned in a dam.
So far, Kutumela’s daughter, Madjadji Flora Shokane (23) and elder sister, Annah Shokane (47), have been arrested in connection with the case.
They all appeared in the Polokwane magistrate court on Friday. The bail hearing has been set for three days, starting from 30 October 2024.
It is alleged that Kutumela, who was stationed at Senwabarana police station, fraudulently took out life and funeral policies for the six victims and has since claimed a total of R10 million from various financial institutions including ABSA, Standard Bank, Capitec, Hollard, Assupol, Old Mutual, Onelife and Clientele.
She allegedly shared the money with her daughter and elder sister.
They face six counts of murder money laundering, receiving proceeds from unlawful activities, twelve counts of fraud and defeating the ends of justice. Money laundering charges apply specifically to Kutumela and her daughter.
