Samancor’ solar energy project resonates with government’s commitment to build greener, cleaner future – Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba
THE 100-Megawatt Solar Energy Project – hailed as a testament to a commitment towards renewable energy, environmental stewardship and economic progress – was launched in Steelpoort, Limpopo, on Thursday.
The project is driven by Kona Maanda in collaboration with mining giant Samancor, China-Africa Fund, CGN Africa Energy and Kona Maanda. Its advancement was given impetus by the recent Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Summit held in Beijing.
The project will be implemented in two phases – the 60 and 40 megawatts, and will supply Samancor with renewable energy.
At the sod-turning ceremony, Limpopo premier, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, was ecstatic over the project’s potential ability to generate jobs, and that it resonates well with government’s programme to build a greener and cleaner future.
“For the people of Limpopo, these jobs represent more than an income; they represent growth, stability and the chance to contribute to something meaningful.
“By harnessing the sun’s power, we can reduce costs for families and businesses, easing the financial burdens on households and fostering a stronger economy,” Ramathuba said.
She said the launch of the project was also a reflection of the momentum gained at the recent Limpopo Provincial Government’s Investment Conference in which companies pledged more than a R120, 3 billion.
