Alleged foreign national cigarette smuggler damages police vehicle in high speed car chase in Limpopo
A foreign national allegedly transporting illicit cigarettes worth more than R450 000 damaged a police vehicle in his attempt to evade arrest during a high speed car chase along N1 near Musina, Limpopo, on Monday.
The drama started around 4am when police officers on routine patrol identified a suspicious Mercedes Benz with Gauteng registration plates.
The driver ignored instructions to stop his vehicle and fled in high speed and driving recklessly. He was pursued and cornered, but bumped into one of the police vehicles when he attempted to reverse the vehicle before fleeing the scene on foot.
However, the police pursued him and he was eventually arrested. His vehicle was found to be carrying illicit cigarettes worth R452 872.
The vehicle was also confiscated.
Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, said the suspect was also found to be in the country illegally, and will also be charged with reckless and negligent driving as well as malicious damage to state property.
He will appear in the Musina magistrate court on Wednesday.
