GNT under investigation: “The board must be held accountable for the breakdown of internal controls,” says DA
THE Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo has called for the immediate removal of Great North Transport (GNT) CEO and the board of directors as the entity comes under scrutiny by the Special Investigating Unit.
GNT has been placed under investigation for alleged corruption, maladministration and malfeasance. Among the matters to be investigated is the misappropriation of pension funds which led to the suffering of former employees whom some of them have since passed away.
DA’s Jacques Smalle believes that the GNT board of directors failed to exercise its accounting and fiduciary duties with the diligence expected of a public sector entity, hence the entity’s state of collapse.
“Under the board’s watch, millions owed to creditors remain unpaid. As the accounting authority, the board must be held accountable for the breakdown of internal controls within the entity.
“If the board is not removed, then the MEC of LEDET and the ANC-led administration must be held accountable,” Smalle.
He also questioned the reinstatement of the CEO, Dr Matata Mokoele, following his suspension on charges of maladministration, underperformance and the intimidation of witnesses.
