Groblers Bridge border post resumes operations after weeks of closure due to severe flooding
OPERATIONS at the Groblers Bridge border post which links South Africa and Botswana were on Wednesday fully restored after weeks of temporary closure due to severe flooding that caused infrastructure damage.
The temporary closure had a negative economic impact, with millions of rand in revenue lost because of the halted cross-border operations and trade between South Africa and Botswana.
Limpopo Treasury MEC, Kgabo Mahoai, who visited the border post last week to assess the repair interventions, was delighted about the resumption of operations.
However, he said there were concerns about the structural safety of the bridge which required assessment by the South African National Road Agency (Sanral).
Mahoai commended the collective effort of the border officials who showed determination in addressing the challenges.
“Their swift response and collaboration ensured that the necessary repairs and interventions were made, and I’m pleased that the reopening of the Groblers Bridge border post means the country can continue to generate revenue through custom duties at this strategic port of entry,” he said.
